Funicular railway in Kommandó/Comandău

The Funicular railway in Kommandó/Comandău was inaugurated in 1890, a unique work of art in Europe, the masterpiece of engineer Emil Lux.

Its purpose was to connect the two railway lines running over a large difference in level in the Tündér Valley/Valea Zânilor.
The principle of operation was extremely simple, namely a gravity-frame system, meaning that the wagons loaded with wood on the upper frame carriage pulled the lower one, which was connected to it by wire ropes, by their weight, and carried the empty wagons. In the middle of the shuttle, the rails were forked to allow the two wagons to pass each other.
